Title:  12. The Primacy of Jesus

Reading : Mt 4:12-17

A. Modern Trends

  •  Pluralism & multiculturalism make all religions equal
  •  Islam makes Jesus a mere prophet who didn't die on cross
  •  Even in Christian circles we often don't honour the Son of God

B. The Twofold Role of Jesus on Earth

This is while he was on earth:

  •  to reveal the Father
  •  to redeem the world

C. His role in Heaven

Before we consider those, let's remember where he is NOW :

Ruling at his Father's right hand:

Rom 8:34 Christ Jesus… is sitting at the place of highest honour next to God, pleading for us.

Eph 1:22 God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church

1 Cor 15:25 he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

Psa 110:1,2 The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion ; you will rule in the midst of your enemies.

i.e. he speaks up for us and he is working to bring about his Father's purposes

In Revelation we see him as one who is undoing the scroll of the end time – it is in his hands.

For us? FEEL SECURE - God is in Control

D. Revealing the Father

The mystery of all religions: is there a God and what is He like?

Jesus came, claiming to have come from heaven – Jn 7

Jn 14:9 Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.

Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God

Heb 1:3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being.

So what did he show?

Taught that truth is vital, taught love is vital – NOT religion!

Mt 11:4,5 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

  • Mixed with sinners, told them God loved them as they were and forgave them as they responded to his love,
  • Trained a band of incompetents and loved them
  • John eventually wrote – “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8,16)

Jn 20:30,31 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name

For us? FEEL SECURE - God is Love

E. Redeeming the World

Classic Summary Verse: Jn 3:16,17 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Lk 24:46,47 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem .

Mt 26:28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins

1 Pet 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.

1 Cor 15:3,4 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
