John's Second Letter

    

 

 

BOOK : 2 John

Description : A short note, almost, to a lady who provided hospitality for travelling ministries

Author: The apostle John who wrote the first letter

Date written : Probably between AD85 and AD95

Brief Synopsis:

•  The apostles traveled from town to town staying with believers. So did the teachers of the heresy of Gnosticism!
•  John writes to this unknown lady who is clearly a believer and who obviously offers hospitality to traveling ministries to warn her to be careful not to take in heretics (in 13 verses the word ‘truth' appears five times)

Encouragement by encapsulated basic teaching

v.5,6 I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands

v.8 Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully

 

Warning not ot take in any heretics

v.10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him.

    

   

Concluding Comments

   

One of the shortest ‘books'/letters in the Bible. Simple, straight forward and personal and which gives us a tiny glimpse into the life of ministry of those days.
