FRAMEWORKS: Psa 76

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

[Preliminary Comments: Another simple and straight forward song from the house of the singers that acts like a lens that brings into focus the presence of the Lord in Israel [v.1,2] who has stood for them [v.3] and revealed His glory [v.4]. Having brought down enemies [v.5,6] He alone is the one to be feared [v.7], for history has shown how He has acted on Israel's behalf [v.8,9] and generally deals with mankind [v.10]. Therefore the wise will ensure they are rightly related to Him. [v.11,12]. A simple call to be alert to the Lord and rightly relate to Him.]

v.1,2 God is the God of Israel and of Jerusalem

v.1  God is renowned in Judah;
     in Israel his name is great.
v.2  His tent is in Salem,
     his dwelling place in Zion.

v.3 He had stood on their behalf against their enemies [implied]

v.3  There he broke the flashing arrows,
     the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.

v.4 He is more glorious and greater than His creation

v.4  You are radiant with light,
     more majestic than mountains rich with game.

v.5,6 He is the One who has utterly brought down their enemies

v.5  The valiant lie plundered,
     they sleep their last sleep;
not one of the warriors
     can lift his hands.
v.6  At your rebuke, God of Jacob,
     both horse and chariot lie still.

v.7 He alone is to be feared

v.7  It is you alone who are to be feared.
     Who can stand before you when you are angry?

v.8,9 History shows he has acted from heaven to deliver the Land

v.8  From heaven you pronounced judgment,
     and the land feared and was quiet—
v.9  when you, God, rose up to judge,
     to save all the afflicted of the land.

v.10 He intervenes in the affairs of mankind

v.10  Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,
     and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.

v.11,12 Relate rightly to Him because He judges the guilty

v.11  Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;
     let all the neighboring lands
     bring gifts to the One to be feared.
v.12  He breaks the spirit of rulers;
     he is feared by the kings of the earth.

[Additional Comments: Here we see a personal, all-powerful God, who relates to Israel and acts on their behalf. These facts should come as a wakeup call to those who oppose His people.]
