FRAMEWORKS: Psa 65: God's Bounteous Provision of the earth

For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.

[Preliminary Comments: Essentially a simple song of praise and thanksgiving for the wonder of God's provision on the earth. God is worthy of our positive response to Him [v.1] because of what He does for us, answering our prayers [v.2], forgiving our sins [v.3] so that those who have entered into relationship with Him are blessed [v.4]. Indeed He comes and acts into the affairs of the world on our behalf [v.5] and as the Creator of all things [v.6,7] He proves awesome wonders on the earth [v.8] in the way He has established the earth so that water enables plant growth [v.9,10] so that it produces an abundant harvest for us [v.11-13]. A picture of Jehovah-Jireh, the God who provides.]

v.1 God is worthy of our praise

v.1  Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion;
     to you our vows will be fulfilled.

v.2 He answers the prayers of those who petition Him

v.2  You who answer prayer,
     to you all people will come.

v.3 He forgives our sins [of the repentant]

v.3  When we were overwhelmed by sins,
     you forgave our transgressions.

v.4 Many of us know His choosing, His calling & His blessing

v.4  Blessed are those you choose
     and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
     of your holy temple.

v.5 He comes and acts on our behalf, yes, here on the earth

v.5  You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,
     God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
     and of the farthest seas,

v.6,7 For He is the all-powerful Creator of all things

v.6  who formed the mountains by your power,
     having armed yourself with strength,
v.7  who stilled the roaring of the seas,
     the roaring of their waves,
     and the turmoil of the nations.

v.8 (Those with eyes to see) Wonder at His creation

v.8  The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
     where morning dawns, where evening fades,
     you call forth songs of joy.

v.9 He has ordained the way the earth works, water to enable growth

v.9  You care for the land and water it;
     you enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with water
     to provide the people with grain,
     for so you have ordained it.

v.10 He provides that water through various means

v.10  You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
     you soften it with showers and bless its crops.

v.11 He provides an abundant provision of food for us

v.11  You crown the year with your bounty,
     and your carts overflow with abundance.

v.12 Wherever you look there is abundant growth life!

v.12  The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;
     the hills are clothed with gladness.

v.13 The grasslands provide for flocks and grain that in turn provide for us

v.13  The meadows are covered with flocks
     and the valleys are mantled with grain;
     they shout for joy and sing.

[Additional Comments: A healthy reminder not to take for granted the provision of the world that has come FROM GOD.]
