A psalm of praise. Of David .

v.1-3 The Greatness of God that deserves praise

v.1  I will exalt you, my God the King;
    I will praise your name for ever and ever.
[I will lift up the One who is God and my king. I will acclaim the name by which He is known for ever.]

v.2  Every day I will praise you
    and extol your name for ever and ever.

[Every day I will pay tribute to Him, I will enthusiastically praise that name for ever]

v.3  Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
    his greatness no one can fathom.
[Why? Because He is great, He is the I AM, the everlasting one, who is simply worthy of praise because of His greatness which we cannot fully comprehend.]

v.4-7 His Greatness is told down through the generations

v.4  One generation commends your works to another;
    they tell of your mighty acts.
[One generation tells the next the wonderful things He has done.]

v.5  They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—
    and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
[They tell of His glory and majesty, the wonderful things He has done.

v.6  They tell of the power of your awesome works—
    and I will proclaim your great deeds.
[They tell about His power seen through the mighty works recorded in history.]

v.7  They celebrate your abundant goodness
    and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

[It causes them to celebrate His goodness and righteousness that has been revealed, so they sing joyfully.]

v.8-9 His Grace, Compassion and Goodness

v.8  The LORD is gracious and compassionate,
    slow to anger and rich in love.

[(We have learned that He is gentle, kind & compassionate, who doesn't fly off the handle but is just full of love.]

v.9  The LORD is good to all;
    he has compassion on all he has made.
[Indeed, He is good to everyone of us, showing compassion to all.]

v.10-12 The response of the world to His wonderful acts

v.10  All your works praise you, LORD;
    your faithful people extol you.
[The world He has made naturally reveals praise to Him, His people enthusiastically lift up His name.]

v.11  They tell of the glory of your kingdom
    and speak of your might,
[They do it by telling how wonderful His reign is, how strong and stable He makes it.]

v.12  so that all people may know of your mighty acts
    and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
[They do that because His intent is that the whole world will know of Him, of the great things He has done, how wonderful His reign is.]

v.13 His Rule is everlasting throughout history

v.13  Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
    and your dominion endures through all generations.

[The big thing is that His reign is unchanging and continues throughout all of history.]

v.13b-20 What He is like and what He does

The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises
    and faithful in all he does.
[The ‘I AM' makes promises of blessing and can be guaranteed to keep them.]

v.14  The LORD upholds all who fall
    and lifts up all who are bowed down.
[He is there for those who stumble and fall, straightening up those who have been bowed down by the pressures of life in this fallen world.]

v.15  The eyes of all look to you,
    and you give them their food at the proper time.
[Therefore all look to Him and He provides the food they need.]

v.16  You open your hand
    and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

[He hands out provisions to all, ready to satisfy every need.]

v.17  The LORD is righteous in all his ways
    and faithful in all he does.
[He always acts rightly in all He does, always remaining true to His character.]

v.18  The LORD is near to all who call on him,
    to all who call on him in truth.
[He is there for whoever calls out to Him for held.

v.19  He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
    he hears their cry and saves them.
[He responds to all who honour Him by providing every need, saving every one when they cry out.]

v.20  The LORD watches over all who love him,
    but all the wicked he will destroy.

[He watches over to protect all who love Him but deals with the wicked. There is that distinction in the way He responds to people.]

v.21 My Response & the Response of the World

v.21  My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD.
    Let every creature praise his holy name
    for ever and ever.

[As a response to all this, I will speak praise of Him always and every living being should respond in this same way.]
