FRAMEWORKS: Isaiah 60: The future glory of Zion

v.1-3 A transforming light is coming

v.4-9 The return of the exiles will herald a new day of prosperity

v.10-16 The transformation includes the world coming to you & enemies falling

v.17-22 Affluence, Peace & Growth will prevail in the light of the Lord

[Preliminary notes: The prophet appears to turn away from the negatives of the present day to a work of the Lord in the future. It will involve the glory of the Lord shining on them [v.1,2 then 19,20], witnessed by the whole world [v.3] who will bow before them [v.14] and bless and provide for them [v.5,10,11,16,17].

It will involve a return of the exiles from around the world [v.4,9] and a time of great prosperity and abundance [v.5-7,9,17] as well as of peace and wellbeing [v.17,18]. It is a picture of great restoration and of being well thought of by the rest of the world.]

v.1-3 A transforming light is coming

v.1 It's a new day, God's glory is coming

v.1  ‘Arise, shine, for your light has come,
    and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

v.2 Although the world is in darkness, God's light will shine on His people

v.2  See, darkness covers the earth
    and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
    and his glory appears over you.

v.3 People come from across the world to see this

v.3  Nations will come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

v.4-9 The return of the exiles will herald a new day of prosperity

v.4 So look around, see the return of the exiles

v.4  ‘Lift up your eyes and look about you:
    all assemble and come to you;
your sons come from afar,
    and your daughters are carried on the hip.

v.5 When that happens you will be radiant and full of joy

v.5  Then you will look and be radiant,
    your heart will throb and swell with joy;
the wealth on the seas will be brought to you,
    to you the riches of the nations will come.

v.6,7 The nation will know prosperity

v.6  Herds of camels will cover your land,
    young camels of Midian and Ephah.
And all from Sheba will come,
    bearing gold and incense
    and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.

v.7  All Kedar's flocks will be gathered to you,
    the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be accepted as offerings on my altar,
    and I will adorn my glorious temple.

v.8 They will wonder at the speed of the return

v.8  ‘Who are these that fly along like clouds,
    like doves to their nests?

v.9 Your descendants will return from all over the world

v.9  Surely the islands look to me;
    in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,
bringing your children from afar,
    with their silver and gold,
to the honour of the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel,
    for he has endowed you with splendour.

v.10-16 The transformation includes the world coming to you & enemies falling

v.10 The world will come to help you, God's past anger replaced with blessing

v.10  ‘Foreigners will rebuild your walls,
    and their kings will serve you.
Though in anger I struck you,
    in favour I will show you compassion.

v.11 The city will always be open for the world to come to you

v.11  Your gates will always stand open,
    they will never be shut, day or night,
so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations –
    their kings led in triumphal procession.

v.12 Those who oppose you will fall

v.12  For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish;
    it will be utterly ruined.

v.13 The glory of the whole land will be seen at the temple

v.13  ‘The glory of Lebanon will come to you,
    the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,
to adorn my sanctuary;
    and I will glorify the place for my feet.

v.14 Those who oppose you will come bowing before you

v.14  The children of your oppressors will come bowing before you;
    all who despise you will bow down at your feet
and will call you the City of the Lord,
    Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

v.15 Rejection will be in the past, all in your future will rejoice

v.15  ‘Although you have been forsaken and hated,
    with no one travelling through,
I will make you the everlasting pride
    and the joy of all generations.

v.16 The blessing of the nations on you will show the Lord's greatness

v.16  You will drink the milk of nations
    and be nursed at royal breasts.
Then you will know that I, the Lord, am your Saviour,
    your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

v.17-22 Affluence, Peace & Growth will prevail in the light of the Lord

v.17 The ordinary will give way to great riches

v.17  Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,
    and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
    and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace your governor
    and well-being your ruler.

v.18 Violence will go, salvation, praise and peace will come

v.18  No longer will violence be heard in your land,
    nor ruin or destruction within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation
    and your gates Praise.

v.19 Instead of nature, God will be your light…

v.19  The sun will no more be your light by day,
    nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your God will be your glory.

v.20 …even more, an everlasting light

v.20  Your sun will never set again,
    and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your days of sorrow will end.

v.21 You will all be righteous, the fruit of God's work

v.21  Then all your people will be righteous
    and they will possess the land for ever.
They are the shoot I have planted,
    the work of my hands,
    for the display of my splendour.

v.22 You will multiply in abundance

v.22  The least of you will become a thousand,
    the smallest a mighty nation.
I am the Lord;
    in its time I will do this swiftly.'
