FRAMEWORKS: Ecclesiastes 11

(The objective of these ‘Frameworks' is to provide an easy-to-read layout of the text in order then to use these individual verses for meditation. To achieve this we have used a variety of means, notes, headings, verse summaries.)

FRAMEWORKS: Ecclesiastes 11: Be at peace with the way life works

[Preliminary Comments: An alternative title for this chapter might be ‘Wise Practices in the face of the Uncertainties AND Predictabilities of Life.' We encourage the reader to identify each of these things: the wise practices, the uncertain things of life and the predictable things of life.]

v.1,2 Spread your investments wisely

v. 1   Ship your grain across the sea;
     after many days you may receive a return.
v.2  Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight;
     you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.

v.3 The work keeps on working in the same way

v.3  If clouds are full of water,
     they pour rain on the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
     in the place where it falls, there it will lie.

v.5 Those who constantly worry about the weather never get round to harvesting

v.4  Whoever watches the wind will not plant;
     whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

v.5 There are mysteries to life that only God understands

v.5  As you do not know the path of the wind,
     or how the body is formed in a mother's womb,
so you cannot understand the work of God,
     the Maker of all things.

v.6 Take all opportunities to work for you don't know how things will work out

v.6  Sow your seed in the morning,
     and at evening let your hands not be idle,
for you do not know which will succeed ,
     whether this or that,
     or whether both will do equally well.

v.7 When the sun shines it is pleasing

v.7  Light is sweet,
     and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.

v.8 But not every day will be bright, darkness will come

v.8  However many years anyone may live,
     let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember the days of darkness,
     for there will be many.
     Everything to come is meaningless.

v.9 Be light-hearted when you are young but learn that God holds us accountable

v.9  You who are young, be happy while you are young,
     and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
     and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
     God will bring you into judgment.

v.10 So don't be anxious about life, for present values may prove to be worthless

v.10  So then, banish anxiety from your heart
     and cast off the troubles of your body,
     for youth and vigour are meaningless.
