[Passage
Synopsis: pray for all in authority in order to be able to live
out the godly peaceable for which we were saved]
v.1,2
(pray for those
in authority that we may live in peace) I
urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession
and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all
those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives
in all godliness and holiness.
v.3,4
(for this is
God's will that ion such an environment the gospel may be shared)
This is good, and pleases God our
Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge
of the truth.
v.5,6
(maintain the
witness of Jesus) For there
is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ
Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now
been witnessed to at the proper time.
v.7
(which is what
Paul's ministry is all about) And
for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle
I am telling the truth, I am not lying and a true and faithful
teacher of the Gentiles.
v.8
(therefore his
desire that prayer is at the heart of church life) Therefore
I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without
anger or disputing.

Synopsis: guidance for women in church gatherings to maintain
good order]
v.9,10 (let
not women cause upset by fashion consciousness but bless by good
deeds) I also want the women
to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves,
not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship
God.
v.11
(gentleness
and submission are good) A woman
should learn in quietness and full submission.
v.12
(Paul sees God's
order as man leading) I do not
permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she
must be quiet.
v.13
(he takes this
from Genesis 2) For Adam was
formed first, then Eve.
v.14
(and from Genesis
3) And Adam was not the one
deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.
v.15

a different critical part to play) But
women will be saved through childbearing if they continue
in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
