Lk 1:48b   he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed

This is part of Mary's Spirit-inspired prophetic song while she is expecting Jesus and meets with Elizabeth . Prior to this verses she started out, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” This was a declaration of praise that came out of the awareness of the wonder of what had happened to her. The Lord had come to her, to her specifically, a young girl. There was nothing special about her as far as she was concerned. When she speaks of her ‘humble state' she means she was relatively poor at least. She wasn't anyone special, but God had come and chosen her to do something remarkable. She was now His servant. She realised that she was now part of the specific plan of God being worked out on the earth.

She also realised something of the significance of it all. Yes, she had been a virgin and yet she was carrying a baby. That was a miracle! They was wonderful enough in itself, but she had been told who her child would be: “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” (v.32) and, “the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God(v.35). There would be no one like her in all of history, she was the one chosen to bear the Son of God into the world. That may not be, in the same way, our role, but it surely is to reveal Jesus through us by His Spirit, and we do each have a role to play in the purposes of God. Can we see ourselves as blessed of God? Can we see that our lives are significant and rejoice over that?
