2 Pet 1:16    We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

It is one of the claims of modern atheistic crusading that the accounts of Jesus Christ are made up, purely fictional, the ideas of men. Peter doesn't allow us that supposition. Peter was concerned that after he had gone he should leave the believers with accounts of Jesus' life that they could rely upon (perhaps that is why we have Mark's Gospel – said to have been written at Peter's guiding.)

Just before our verse today he had said, “So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body,” (v.12,13), indicating his desire to ensure they remembered what had happened. This is why he now comes with this strong declaration: “We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about… our Lord Jesus Christ.” Oh no, he says, these weren't made up stories, no, “we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” In other words, we actually saw him, heard him and experienced him and saw his wonder, the wonder of the glorious Son of God.

Are we sure in our faith of its beginnings? Don't ever be put off by the rantings of modern atheists that Jesus didn't really exist. The Gospels and so many of the letters are simply testimonies of eye-witnesses. Be reassured!
