Daily Thoughts : July 5th

Deut 23:21   If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the LORD your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin.

I suspect most promises made to God are made rashly in the heat of a desperate moment. There are also times, perhaps, at the end of a powerful meeting when calls for responses are made and you made that declaration – a vow before God. God looks for promises to be upheld and sometimes that is not an easy thing.

It is one thing to make a vow in the heat of faith, but on Monday morning in the face of tough life, it may seem almost impossible. It is at such times you will need to reach out to the Lord for His grace to enable you to do what you said. It may be that that grace will be in the form of wisdom you need to ask for, to know how to do it. God leads us into making such vows sometimes so that on the next day we will have to seek Him and come closer to Him to be able to do what we said.

Now there are going to be times when the vow you made was stupid and wrong, Jephthah (Jud 11:30). God does not need bribing and if you are silly enough to make this sort of vow, confess your stupidity, don't do the wrong thing and ask for forgiveness on the basis of Jesus dying on the Cross for you. All sins are covered that way, even the sins of foolish presumption or of trying to bribe God. They are all covered by the Cross.
