Psa 37:4   Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

I must confess this is one of my favourite verses in the Old Testament because it is a key to our future. It starts out, Delight yourself in the Lord. That is God's objective for us, that we will delight in Him. When you delight in someone you enjoy them because you know them intimately. Do you delight in your husband or wife? I do. I delight in my wife. She is wonderful; she is the apple of my eye, the one I love more than anyone or anything else in the world (outside the Lord). Being with her, enjoying her company, talking with her, sharing with her, doing things with her – in all these ways I delight in her. And it's the same with the Lord. I delight in Him – enjoy being with Him, enjoy His company, enjoy listening to Him and talking to Him doing things with Him – in these ways I delight in Him.

Then comes a promise: he will give you the desires of your heart. I believe that has a twofold meaning. First of all as you delight in Him he will put desires on your heart; you will find your desires changing and if you look, you will see you have different desires from before you knew the Lord or even from when you first knew Him. So He puts new desires on your heart – and then He gives you those things. That is what is so amazing. He puts new wonderful desires on our hearts as we encounter Him, and then He enables us to enter in and receive those things – and that is even more wonderful, as we realise the extent of His love for us – that's He's out to bless us and bless us even more!
