2 Sam 7:1    the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him

We find it difficult to believe that God can intervene in our circumstances to ensure other people give us a good time! Yet that is a truth that comes out in the Bible again and again. Consider Joseph: “When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant.” (Gen 39:3,4)

Now there is a worldly phrase to be considered here: “The Lord helps those who help themselves.” The partial truth here is that we do have a part to play. So when our verse today says that the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him that doesn't mean David hadn't had to do anything – he did! He had to fight off his enemies but the Lord gave him success over them. Similarly with Joseph note that the Lord gave him success in everything he did. In other words God blessed Joseph's work.

Conclusion? When we are following the Lord, as we submit our lives to Him and let Him lead us, assuming we are doing what He wants, we may expect His blessing on our activities. Is that too presumptuous? No, for it is the Lord's intention to bless His children and His world through them. That comes through in Scripture again and again, so let's not be in fear of saying it, living it, expecting and being part of it.
