Daily Thoughts : January 8th

Mk 16:17   And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

Yes, this is from a passage that some ancient manuscripts don't include, but it does conform to what other scripture teaches us. Generally Jesus taught, “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.” (Jn 14:12) and so, as he had delivered people from demons and taught his disciples to do the same, we are also able to as we abide in him.

But then there comes this, what appears to many to be strange talk of “new tongues”. I like the expression “new” tongues because it suggests that they are words that don't exist in any existing language. Paul speaks of them as ‘tongues of angels' (1 Cor 13:1) and indeed they clearly are sometimes the language of those nearby who hears them (Acts 2:11, 10:46), but mostly it appears that they are a means of expression to God that defies our knowledge, a means of bypassing the mind when we run our of words of praise. They are indeed new words, words beyond our understanding, words that release our spirit in praise when naturally we run out.

These ‘new' tongues are God's provision for a new people, empowered by the Spirit in a new way, filled by Him in a new way, so that they have a new desire to praise Him in a new measure (without measure) which can only be satisfied by the enabling from heaven with a heavenly language.
